The Monroe Rotary club is an active group of business professionals. They unite to provide services and fellowship to the community.

Club History
The Monroe Rotary Club was founded on May 5, 1924 and has provided service to Monroe for almost 80 years. Affiliated with Rotary District 6400 (Southeast Michigan and Ontario) and Rotary International, the service club combines weekly meetings with a variety of service projects and fundraising efforts throughout the year. Major projects include:

Rotary Spoke - February 26th
The Monroe Rotary club met Feb 26 at the Holiday Inn Express with president Susan Mehregan presiding.

Guests : Dave Alexander, Kevin Dahm, proposed member Bill Kipf, and District governor nominee Kim tower

Jim Altiere won the 50-50 drawing

Robert Dahm announced the start-up of an online ticket sale service that will enable anyone to purchase tickets to local events sponsored by many local organizations. www.emerciv.com.

Ellen McGormley reminded members who volunteered to help with the Community of Needs meal of the serving times on Thursday.

Pat Barley circulated pictures of the orphan children in Honduras who are benefiting from the Rotary school project.

Steve Pipis has a few tickets still available to see the Mitch Rider concert April 12.

All members are invited to attend a Thursday noon meeting at the Lone Star restaurant in Dundee. A new Rotary club may be formed in that community.

Kim Tower, District Governor Nominee, gave a program outlining the activities at the District Conference that will be held May 8-11 at Niagara Falls, Canada. It will be at a large Sheraton hotel complex. Besides an inspirational program, other activities include daily kids programs, golf outings, bike tours, boat tours, shopping, etc. Meeting the exchange students will highlight the meeting.

The program next week will be presented by Mike Rodenbeck.

Rotary Spoke - February 5th, 2008
Monroe Rotary Club met Feb. 5 at the Holiday Inn Express with president Susan Mehregan presiding.

Guests included Mala Gupta and visiting Rotarian Jean Sieler

Announcements: Thursday Feb 7 Dr. Bush Ahmad will host an evening meeting at his home to help introduce new members to Rotary. District governor Jennifer Jones and her husband will attend.

There will be a Service above Self committee meeting Wed. noon Feb. 6 at Panera.

A Dundee Rotary Club organizational meeting will be at the Lone Star restaurant Feb. 7. at noon.

Rotarians are invited to meet Governor elect Bruce Goldsen Feb. 21 12:15 pm at the Southgate Holiday Inn. Attendance needs to be confirmed by Feb. 25

President Susan gave an updated report on the progress of building a school in Valle de Sula, Honduras. New bathrooms, roofs, painting and electrical service are being completed.

More volunteers are needed to teach the Junior Achievement program in the Monroe grade schools.

Phyllis Richards distributed nomination forms to be used in submitting names of individuals worthy of receiving the outstanding service award. Ellen McGormley needs extra help in serving at the Community of Needs meal Feb. 28.

Jim Morr reported the Rotary blood drive will be April 15.

Jim Strebler received his Paul Harris Fellowship award.

Steve Pipis has arranged for Rotarians and guests to attend the Mitch Rider concert April 12 at the Meyer theatre.

There will be a Rotary board meeting Monday noon Feb. 11 at Quatros.

Dr Arun Gupta gave a program on Omega Laser Therapy that combines Acupuncture principles, cold laser, counseling, and Psychotherapy that addresses problems of alcohol, nicotine and drug addiction along with weight control and pain management. The FDA's Investigational Review board has these treatments under consideration.

DR. Ram Nair will present next week's program.

The Monroe Rotary Club met on Tuesday, January 29 at noon at the Holiday Inn Express, Monroe. President Susan Mehregan presided.

Virginia Mehregan attended as a guest. Donna Bruck and Bill Kipf attended as proposed new members. Pat and Mary Kehoe were visiting Rotarians from the Carleton Club.

Jim Schubargo won the 50-50 drawing.

Announcements:

The Service Above Self Committee will meet Wednesday, February 6 at noon at Panera Bread.
Deanna Sobocienski will meet with prospective Rotarians in Dundee next Thursday at noon at the Lone Star Steakhouse.
The Fireside Chat will be Thursday, February 7 at 7 pm at Dr. Bush Ahmad's home.
Patrick Barley is starting to receive essays as part of the Four Way Test Essay contest.
The next Community of Need Meal will be Thursday, February 28.
A social night will be held on Saturday, April 12 when Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels will perform at the Meyer Theater at MCCC.
A recent Monroe Evening News article about the Children's Center was shared with members. The Club's ongoing Literacy Project provides books to the Children's Center.
Dave and Sue Mehregan presented a program on their trip to the Honduras last fall. They shared stories and photos of the work being done in San Pedro Sula. The projects underway in San Pedro Sula through the support of Rotary Clubs in District 6400, and San Pedro Sula, as well as elsewhere, include:
1. renovations to a school for 600 students. Demolition and painting were shown in photos. Water purification and new restrooms are also being planned.
2. Provision of appliances such as washing machines and dryers to Abrigo Shelter at the Mario Catarino Hospital. This is a dormitory where families stay while their children are being treated at the hospital.
3. A dental clinic where 350 patients were treated in six days. Many Hondurans received new dentures.
4. La Casa de Las Ninas orphanage for girls. Young girls can be sponsored for school, books and uniform for $75 per year.
While in San Pedro Sula, the group also attended meetings at three Rotary Clubs.

Next week Dr. Arun Gupta has the program. His topic for discussion will be ?Treating addictions holistically?.

Service Programs
Interact
a Rotary sponsored organization providing leadership development and service opportunities for high school students at St. Mary's Catholic Central High School and Monroe High School in Monroe. The Rotary club of Monroe talks to students

RYLA
a Rotary District 6400 leadership training opportunity held every November. The Monroe Rotary Club sponsors participation by four local students annually.

Rotary Youth Exchange
The Monroe Rotary Club has sponsered several in-bound exchange student from Brazil now attending Monroe High School.

Scholarships
The Monroe Rotary Club offers scholarships annually to assist local students attending Monroe County Community College.

Sports Teams
Rotarians sponsor and coach youth sports activities including softball and soccer.

Holiday Camp
The Monroe Rotary Club helps sponsor the Holiday Camp in Grape which provides summer programs for youth with disabilities. One meeting each summer is a pizza party at the camp.

Christmas Party
Rotarians hold an annual Christmas Party for students from the ISD's program with a visit from Santa.

Stepping Stones Horseback Riding
The Rotary Club is a major sponsor of the Horseback Riding Camp for children with disabilties.

Vocational Service Projects
include Student Career Essay Contest and annual awards given to local businesses for effective employee recognition programs.

Salvation Army Bellringing
For many years, the Monroe Rotary Club has been the top local fundraising organization Bellringing for the Salvation Army.

Red Cross Blood Drive
An annual blood drive at the YMCA sponsored by the Monroe Rotary Club helps keep adequate blood supplies available for the local Red Cross.
