What is the Emergent Church?

Do you know people who say they are Christian, love God but don’t go to church? Do you know others whose church is quite unorthodox, perhaps meeting in a home, a restaurant, coffee house or even a bar or club? They may be part of a new movement in Christianity called the Emergent Church. One of the leaders of this new movement, Brian McLaren says, If you have a new world you need a new church. You have a new world.

This new movement in the church although not organized seems to have common characteristics:
Identifying with Jesus – emphasis on the Kingdom of God coming to earth and a reaching out to people rather than a “come to us” mentality
Transforming Secular Space – tearing down the sacred/secular divide
Living as a Community – a family rather than an institution; a people rather than a place
Welcoming the Stranger – following the inclusive practices of Jesus by welcoming those who are different; moving from perceived arrogance to transparent humility (being real)
Serving with Generosity – moving from social programs to socially engaged way of life (i.e. friends); becoming good news people before proclaiming the good news message
Participating as Producers – becoming sharers of gifts rather than consumers of services; providing an opportunity for each person to contribute his or her story
Creating as Created Beings – every member is a created being and is therefore a creative being; creativity is participating in God
Leading as a Body – moving from stifling control to creative freedom; leadership based on gifting and passion rather than position
Merging Ancient and Contemporary Spiritualities – recapturing the best of the first few centuries of Christianity such as embracing liturgy, retrieving a monastic spirituality, and fostering a worshipful way of life
