The Crucible by Arthur Miller

The Monroe Community Players proudly present Arthur Miller’s THE CRUCIBLE as the first show of the 2010-11 Season. Show dates are October 1,2 & 3 at the beautiful Meyer Theatre located on the campus of Monroe County Community College.

THE CRUCIBLE is an exciting drama about the Puritan purge of witchcraft in old Salem. It is both a gripping historical play and a parable of what can happen when blind, unreasoning fear and bigotry grip a community.

THE CRUCIBLE focuses on a young farmer, his wife; and a young servant-girl who maliciously causes the wife’s arrest for witchcraft. The farmer brings the girl to court to admit the lie—and it is here that the monstrous course of bigotry and deceit is terrifyingly depicted. Greed, forbidden lust and fear cloaked in a robe of religious piety grip the community while rational, considered thought is abandoned to mob mentality in a true witch hunt.

THE CRUCIBAL is part historical drama and part commentary on the House Un-American Committee hearings held in Congress during the height of the Red Scare that gripped the nation in the Fifties.

One of Arthur Miller’s most enduring and powerful plays, THE CRUCIBLE remains one of the truly great American plays. Please note: the subject matter may be too intense for younger or sensitive audience members.
