From the lakefront estates to farm and rural communities, you'll find Monroe County Michigan to be a diverse and comfortable location for your home and family.
Originally established in 1817, Monroe County has seen its fair share of history and changes in residents, land and economy. Early settlers found Monroe to be perfect location for fur trades set amongst easy water access with Lake Erie to the east and the River Raisin opening into what is now called the Port of Monroe. As more and more settlers made their way west, Monroe had become the regions hot-spot for travelers and industry growth. In fact, it was thought that Monroe would eventually become a major metropolitan area similar to that of Detroit and Ann Arbor to the north and Toledo, Ohio to the south.
Fortunately, Monroe Michigan and the surrounding area has remained a convenient, safe and conservative community. Many residents choose to live in the peace and quiet of Monroe County while taking advantage of the quick access to Detroit, Ann Arbor and Toledo for work. It's a win-win situation. Transportation routes include I23, running north and south at Monroe's western border from Ann Arbor to Toledo and Sylvania, Ohio and I75 along Lake Erie running north and south between Detroit and Toledo. Continue on I75 and you'll find yourself on a cross county trip to Sault St. Marie and Canada in the far north or perhaps Florida in the south. Monroe County makes for a perfectly central location for daily living and travel.
Monroe's local economy is anchored by vast agricultural projects as well as the automotive industry. Interior farm land produces just about every major crop including, corn, soy beans, potatoes, and wheat. Other agricultural products include apples, pears, peaches, pumpkins, strawberries and other miscellaneous fruits. It is entirely possible to shop for purely local commodities in and around your community.
When it comes to climate, you'll appreciate a complete and distinct four seasons without the risk of severe weather hazards. Monroe County's climate can be described as mild yet allows for summer days in the near 100s and winter days with a thick blanket of snow. Fall colors and light breezes are always apparent in the fall and spring-time draws the fresh green foliage and warm winds that signify summer's return.
Monroe County boasts a number of tourist attractions such as Sterling State Park on the shore of Lake Erie with camping, swimming and biking trails. Also, take advantage of world-class fishing opportunities and charter services. Cabela's, a leader in outdoor clothing and equipment, is located jut of I23 in Dundee, Michigan and a number of other private attractions such as farms, orchards, and even a zoo are only minutes away. And of course parks have been established in every community with features such as tennis courts, basketball courts, playgrounds and even a few skating parks complete with ramps, rails and half pipes. You'll never have an excuse to be bored in Monroe County.
And, if your primary concern for your family, as with most, is schools and churches, Monroe County has plenty to offer. Take the time to research each school and find one that best fits your needs and criteria. The ever growing Monroe County Community College located on Raisinville Road has been offering affordable and comprehensive classes for over thirty-five years. As for churches, Monroe is home to nearly every religion with a prominent Christian community. It is estimated that over 200 churches exist within Monroe county, and there's surely one close to your new home that suits your lifestyle and spiritual needs.
As a lifelong resident, there's little advice about Monroe that I can't offer to new and future residents.
