As front man for The Monkees, Micky Dolenz helped the band sell more than 65 million records worldwide. The Monkees first single, The Last Train to Clarksville, which featured Dolenz on lead vocals, hit the charts on September 10, 1966 and rocketed to No 1. Two days later, The Monkees television show debuted on NBC to great success. The groups first four LPs reached No. 1 and the band garnered three consecutive No. 1 singles: The Last Train to Clarksville,
Im a Believer and Daydream Believer.
In 1986, MTV broadcast nightly episodes of the television show, exposing a whole new generation to The Monkees. This spurred Micky and fellow Monkees Peter Tork and Davy Jones to reunite for a tour that summer. The tour was so successful that all of the Monkees classic LPs were re-released and new material was produced. At one point in 1987, there were seven of Monkees LPs on Billboards Top 200 LPs Chart.
